The film is inspired by a real-life incident known as the "Haringey Child Protection Case." In 1987, a young boy named Tyra Hakeem was taken into care after his foster parents reported that he had been violent and unmanageable. His biological parents, Winston and Maureen Hakeem, claimed that the foster parents had been abusive and racist towards them. (real name Aristide Massaccesi) was an iconic figure in Italian exploitation cinema, known for a vast array of horror, erotic, and adult films. During the final phase of his career, D'Amato was producing numerous hardcore adult films at an incredible pace. In the last three years of his life alone, he would make nearly a hundred adult movies. Provocation was filmed as a "soft-core quickie" in between his harder assignments, and it is widely considered a lesser, amateurish imitation of the work of erotic film auteur Tinto Brass, from whose productions D'Amato borrowed several actors.
