The story unfolds in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio de Janeiro between the late 1960s and early 1980s. We follow two boys whose lives take radically different paths. One is Buscapé (Rocket), a sensitive and frightened young man who sees photography as his only way out of the violence that surrounds him. The other is Dadinho (Li'l Zé), a brutal and ambitious child who grows up to be the neighborhood's most feared drug lord, a sociopath who rules through terror. The film documents the rise of organized crime in the favela, culminating in a devastating war between Li'l Zé and a vigilante-turned-criminal known as Knockout Ned.
Instead, they established a makeshift acting school in the favelas, recruiting over 200 non-professional actors, many of whom actually lived in neighborhoods like Cidade de Deus. Through months of intensive improvisation workshops, the directors forged a raw, hyper-realistic acting style.
