Slant Magazine, while acknowledging the film was "against all odds, Adam Sandler’s funniest effort in close to a decade," heavily criticized Sandler for "blatantly ripping off Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G and Borat characters" and called Rob Schneider’s performance as a "wannabe Muslim terrorist" a career low.

John Turturro deserves a special mention as The Phantom. His portrayal of a flashy, goat-herding terrorist who loves disco and has a thinly veiled homoerotic rivalry with Zohan is the comedic highlight of the film. It is a performance of pure, unadulterated camp.
